In November 2006 the City of Irving adopted a new alarm systems ordinance. In 2005, the police department responded to over 10,000 alarms calls with 99% of them being false. False alarms cost the City of Irving and its citizens thousands of dollars per year and take police officers from actual emergencies. The ordinance also creates a registration process, provides for annual alarm permit fees of residential and business alarms, and provides for fees for false alarms to encourage all alarm users to maintain the reliability of and to properly use their alarm equipment.
